Family Consecration to the
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary

The Ceremony

On the day on which the Consecration is to be made, the family should devoutly assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive Holy Communion. If at all possible, the Rosary should be said immediately before the Consecration.  If possible, the Priest, who will be blessing the picture or statue of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, should lead the family in the recitation of the Holy Rosary (i.e. the traditional 5 decades) with everyone kneeling. Thereafter, the Family Rosary should be recited every evening by all of the members of the family who kneel before the picture or statue of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In the presence of the family or organization to be consecrated, the Priest , who is wearing the black cassock and black cassock cincture, puts on a surplice and a white stole.  The Priest then blesses the picture or statue of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary with the following prayers.

Blessing of the Picture or Statue of the
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R. Who made heaven and earth.

V. The Lord be with thee.
R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray

Almighty, everlasting God, Who does not forbid us to represent Thy saints in stone or paint, so that as often as we look upon their likenesses with the eyes of the body, we may, with the eyes of the mind, meditate upon their holiness and be led to imitate their deeds; in Thy kindness we beseech Thee to bless + and to sanctify + this picture (statue) intended to honor and to call to mind the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary; so that whoever in its presence would humbly strive to serve and to honor the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary may by her merits and intercession gain from Thee grace in the present life and eternal glory in the life to come. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Priest now sprinkles the picture (statue) with holy water.

The head of the family, or of the organization, now places the picture (statue) in the place of honor set aside for it.  All of the members of the family kneel before the picture or statue as he reads the following in a normal voice:

An Act of Consecration to the
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary

O Holy Mother of God, all the members of our family (society; organization) fly to thy patronage so that just as our Heavenly Father made thee the Mother and Heart of the Holy Family at Nazareth, so too, from this day forward, may thou also be our spiritual Mother and the holy Heart of our home.

To thee, to thy Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, we now have recourse so that we may be defended by thy powerful protection and favored with thy motherly blessings. O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, defend each of us from the enemies of our soul.  Do thou bless and protect each of us and also all of our material possessions here on earth for the Greater Honor and Glory of God and the salvation of souls as well as for the relief and release of the Poor, Suffering Souls in Purgatory.

We beseech thee to continue to keep thy mantle of protection around each of us and to show us favor and to bless us, O Kind Heart of Mary, as thou once favored and blessed the home and family of thy cousin Elizabeth and the newly-wedded couple at Cana.

From now on, thy picture (statue), O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, will occupy the place of honor in this home and thou wilt truly be our spiritual Mother.  Grant that thy entrance into our home as Queen may further the interests of the Kingdom of the Heart of thy Divine Son, Jesus, among us. As a result of our Consecration to thy Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, may we feel the nearness of thy protection now and at the hour of our death.  We all humbly beseech thee to grant each of us the Grace of Final Perseverance in the Catholic Church and to obtain for us the grace to be together with thee in Heaven forever and ever.  Amen.

Then all recite in a normal voice:

O Virgin Mother of God, I surrender myself to thee as thy child; and, in honor of thy purity, I offer thee my soul and body, my mind and senses, and I plead thy grace to keep me from sin. Amen.

Mother, behold thy child.
Mother, behold thy child.
Mother, behold thy child.

I have placed my confidence in thee and shall never be confounded.

Recite three Hail Marys, adding the following ejaculation after each Hail Mary:

Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, have mercy on us.

One Plenary Indulgence for the Consecration, at the time of the Consecration, for each person who takes an actual part in the Consecration on the conditions of being in the state of Sanctifying Grace and having the intention to gain the Plenary Indulgence.

Renewal of the Consecration to the
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary

To keep alive the memory of the consecration to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary and, at the same time to acquaint the younger members of the family with it as they grow older, it is very helpful to renew the Consecration periodically, at least once a year on the anniversary of the first Consecration and also on the Feast Day of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is August 22.

On the day the renewal is to be made, the family should devoutly assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive Holy Communion. If at all possible, the Rosary, of the traditional five decades, should be said with everyone kneeling and immediately before the Renewal. All of the members of the family kneel before the picture or statue of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary. Everyone recites together the following prayers in a normal voice:

Act of Renewal of Consecration to the
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary

Most Holy Virgin, Mother of God and our Mother, we who on a previous occasion consecrated ourselves with all the fervor of our souls to thy Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, come now with the same sentiments and hereby renew our Consecration to thy Sorrowful and Immaculate Hear and once again proclaim thee to be our Queen and the spiritual Mother of our home.

We are sincerely grateful to thee for the motherly solicitude with which thou hast favored us. At the same time, we regret not having served thee as true children.

Again we recognize thee as the true spiritual Mother and holy Heart of our family. As proof we again consecrate ourselves and all that we have to thee, to thy Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, so that thou may bless and protect each of us and also all of our material possessions here on earth for the Greater Honor and Glory of God and the salvation of souls as well as for the relief and release of the Poor, Suffering Souls in Purgatory.

We humbly beseech thee to continue to keep thy mantle of protection around each of us and to show us favor and to bless us, O Kind Heart of Mary, as thou once favored and blessed the home and family of thy cousin Elizabeth and the newly-wedded couple at Cana and also to grant each of us the Grace of Final Perseverance in the Catholic Church and to obtain for us the grace to be together with thee in Heaven forever and ever.

One Plenary Indulgence for the Renewal of Consecration, at the time of the renewal, for each person who takes an actual part in the renewal on the conditions of being in the state of Sanctifying Grace and having the intention to gain the Plenary Indulgence.

“Now the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing; that you may abound in Hope, and in the power of the Holy Ghost”  (Romans 15:13).

“Charity is patient, is kind: Charity...beareth all things, Believeth all things, Hopeth all things, endureth all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7).

“Now Faith is the substance of things to be Hoped for, the evidence of things that appear not” (Hebrews 11:1).
