First Sunday in Lent
Proper Preparation
Catholic Douay Rheims Bible
This is the Written Word of God
"Proximate preparation" includes two prayers:
1) The Act of Contrition.2) The Veni, Sancte Spiritus.
O my God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, because I love Thee above all things with my whole heart and soul. I detest all of my sins because it was for them and His Love for me that Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Most Blessed Trinity, my Lord and my God, suffered, was crucified, and died on the cross. O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee by my sins, faults, imperfections, negligences and carelessness, Who art all good and deserving of all of my love.
I firmly resolve with the help of Thy Grace, to sin no more, to confess my sins, to do penance, to amend my life, to avoid all of the near occasions of sin, and always give to Thee freely, liberally and generously what is of supererogation and perfection, not only in greater things, but especially in lesser things, so that I may gain beforehand Thy efficacious, superabundant, particular and special Graces and Helps so that I will always be victorious in resisting and overcoming all temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil and his followers. Grant me those Graces and Helps needed so that my every thought, word and action may be done solely out of love for Thee, Who art Love. Amen.
Saint John Chrysostom
It was the custom of Patriarch Saint John Chrysostom [b. Antioch, c. 347 A.D. - d. at Commana in Pontus on Friday, September 14, 407 A.D.], Patriarch of Constantinople [Thursday, February 26, 398 A.D. - Thursday, June 24, 404 A.D.], exiled from his See the 2nd time on Thursday, June 24, 404 A.D., Father and Doctor of the Catholic Church, to properly prepare himself and his Congregation before preaching. He taught that unless God the Holy Ghost prepares the minds and hearts of the Preacher and of the Congregation, the Preacher preaches in vain and the Congregation listens in vain.
Therefore, so as not to waste your time, please pray the Veni, Sancte Spiritus, remembering how one Holy Saint was of the opinion that a Sermon is a Sacramental.
Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Come, O Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful
And kindle in them the fire of Thy love.
V. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be
created;
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Let Us Pray
O God, who didst instruct the hearts of Thy faithful by the light of Thy Holy Spirit, grant us in the same Spirit to relish what is right and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary; pray for us.
Saint Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Catholic Schools,
pray for us.
Epistle for the First Sunday in Lent
2 Corinthians 6:1-10.
The Epistle appointed to be read during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass today is taken from Saint Paul's 2nd Epistle to the Corinthians, Chapter 6, Verses 1-10.
Brethren:
We... exhort you, that you receive not the Grace of God in vain. For He saith:
In an accepted time have I heard thee; and in the day of salvation have I helped thee.Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
Giving no offence to any man, that our ministry be not blamed: but in all things let us exhibit ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in tribulation, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in prisons, in seditions, in labours, in watchings, in fastings, in chastity, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in sweetness, in the Holy Ghost, in charity unfeigned, in the word of Truth, in the power of God.
By the armour of justice on the right hand and on the left. By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastised, and not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as needy, yet enriching many; as having nothing, and possessing all things.
Gospel for the First Sunday in Lent
Matthew 4:1-11.
The Gospel for today is taken from the Holy Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 4, Verses 1-11.
At that time:
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the Devil.
And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards He was hungry.
And the tempter coming said to Him:
If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.Who answered and said: It is written:
Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.Then the Devil took Him up into the holy city, and set Him upon the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him:
If Thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written:Jesus said to him:That He hath given His Angels charge over Thee, and in their hands shall they bear thee up, lest perhaps Thou dash Thy foot against a stone.
It is written again:Again the Devil took Him up into a very high mountain, and shewed Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, and said to Him: All these will I give Thee, if falling down Thou wilt adore me.Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Then Jesus saith to him:
Begone, Satan: for it is written:Then the Devil left Him; and behold Angels came and ministered to Him.The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and Him only shalt thou serve.
Thus far are the words of today's Holy Gospel.

“His Truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night. Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee” (TRACT - Psalm 90:5-7).
VIn the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen.
In today’s Tract from Psalm 90, God the Holy Ghost is telling all of us that God will protect us from all of our enemies.
“His Truth shall compass thee with a shield”.It is comforting to know that God’s Truth is a shield that protects us from the lies of the devils and their human instruments.
But the Scripture also teaches all of us that we must first be lovers of the Truth, otherwise God will never protect us with His shield of Truth where you read:
“...because they receive not the love of the Truth, that they might be saved. Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying: That all may be judged who have not believed the Truth” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11).What is “the terror of the night”?“Thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night” (Psalm 90:5).
It includes negative thoughts and feelings as well as worry about oneself and others, including all the problems of the day which want to spend the night roosting in the mind which can lead to insomnia and other problems.
“Of the arrow that flieth in the day” (Psalm 90:6).Many years ago, by the Most Holy Will and Grace of God, I had the opportunity to attend a Catholic Grade School. Every 6 weeks, when the report cards would come out, the Pastor of our Church, who held the rank of a Right Reverend Monsignor, would go around to all eight separate classrooms and hand out every individual report card to every individual student. After this, the Sister who taught that particular grade, would ask him if he would be so kind as to give a brief dramatic performance.
By the way, it was by doing entire plays by Shakespeare that he was able to bring in enough money to pay off the debt on the new church building which debt he had inherited from the previous Pastor. So, of course, he was more than happy to oblige.
Monsignor would quote either from the famous dagger scene soliloquy of Macbeth, or the famous soliloquy of Hamlet that begins: “To be, or not to be”.
What follows seems to explain the passage in this Psalm because the Bard of Avon has Hamlet say:
“Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to sufferThis refers to the evil spirits that invade the earth, wandering around at night, and of those that even dare to prowl around during the light of day.
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them” (William Shakespeare, “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”, 1604 A.D., ACT III, Scene I, Elsinore. A room in the Castle, Hamlet-Soliloquy) so accurately explains “the arrow that flieth in the day.”“Of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil” (Psalm 90:6).
This is explained by Saint Peter in the New Testament where he writes:
“Be sober and watch: because your adversary the Devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist ye, strong in faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).God will protect you from the attacks of the Devil and his legions of fallen angels by means of your Guardian Angel. So also, Saint Michael the Archangel will defend you if you are faithful in saying the Exorcism every day.“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee” (Psalm 90:7).
This passage from verse 7 is explained more clearly in verses 14 through 16:
90:14. Because he hoped in Me, I will deliver him: I will protect him because he hath known My Name.On Sundays and special Feast Days, it is recited or chanted during Compline.90:15. He shall cry to Me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation, I will deliver him, and I will glorify him.
90:16. I will fill him with length of days; and I will shew him My salvation.
These passages We have been explaining are from Psalm 90 which Psalm was recited by many people during the German air raids on England during World War II because it gives people HOPE as it increases their FAITH, TRUST, and CONFIDENCE in God as the Apocalypse testifies:
“11 He that hurteth, let him hurt still: and he that is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is just, let him be justified still: and he that is holy, let him be sanctified still.
12 Behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to his works.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.
14 Blessed are they that wash their robes in the Blood of the Lamb: that they may have a right to the Tree of Life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.” (Apocalypse 22:11-14).
For your Resolutions, right now thank the good God for His promise to protect you from all of the evil spirits and their human agents, not only in Psalm 90, but even in chapter 22 of the Apocalypse.
During this Lent, while you are trying, by the Grace of God, to redouble your efforts to live a life which is holy and pleasing to God, and while you are realistic if you expect to be attacked again and again by such things as:
“the terror of the night. Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil”while you are at it be at peace and remember God’s promise to those who truly love Him so that even if, God forbid, many should fall into the temptations of the devils, know that you are protected by the shield of God’s Truth.
This is why even IF
“a thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand”you are protected and so
“it shall not come nigh [to] thee”provided that you earn the right to God’s protection by continuing to pray for the Graces you need to always remain just - i.e. to obey God’s Laws; and holy - i.e. to sanctify yourself by assisting at Mass and receiving the Sacraments.
Holiness should also be found in your Spiritual Life.
We recommend moderation such as only one or two religious devotions, rather than many of them.
We likewise recommend a realistic prayer life by which you take into consideration the demands made on your time, which you should also consider regarding your Spiritual Reading.
The bottom line is this: it is better to say a few prayers for your Morning and Evening Prayers everyday, than more prayers said but once a week.
It is also better to spend 2 to 5 minutes every day doing your Spiritual Reading than trying to make up for it once a week.
Of course, IF you have more time for these things, then you should devote more time to them. But, IF you are on a very tight time schedule, then the key is to do a little each and every day of the week - all 7 days - rather than lot, but only once a week.
As a final resolution, in the Holy Name of Jesus, and in an exercise of Catholic Charity, please contribute to the support of the Church - in this case - the Shrine of Saint Jude. Please help us to save Souls! Thank you for your thoughtfulness and Charity! Remember, God is never outdone in generosity!!!
Think how happy you will be when, in the next life, God shows you all of the Souls you helped to save by helping our Apostolates, including this Sermon web site, because "he who causeth a sinner to be converted from the error of his way, shall save his soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins" (James 5:20).
“And in doing good, let us not fail. For in due time we shall reap, not failing. Therefore, whilst we have time, let us work good to all men, but especially to those who are of the household of the faith” (Galatians 6:9-10).
“His Truth shall
compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the
night. Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that
walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand:
but it shall not come nigh thee” (TRACT - Psalm 90:5-7).
V In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen.
