ROME – That Pope John Paul II was a pivotal figure in the fall of European communism is accepted as a truism, but many details of that drama have remained hidden in archives. A U.S. biographer of the late pope has now provided particulars of what he describes as the full-scale war by communism against the Catholic Church, and Pope John Paul’s astute and successful counter-strategy.
The Polish pope displayed political savvy and “a shrewdness that combined steadiness of strategic vision with tactical flexibility,” G. W. told an audience of seminarians, diplomats and Vatican officials at the Pontifical North American College Jan. 9. One of Pope John Paul’s moves, W. said, was to appoint as his own secretary of state Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, the architect of the Vatican’s “Ostpolitik” efforts to reach workable compromises with communist regimes.
By doing so, the late pope “created tactical advantages for the church: As the pope preached moral revolution over the heads of communist regimes, speaking directly to their people, Casaroli continued his diplomacy, thus denying the communists the opportunity to charge that the church had reneged on its commitment to dialogue,” W. said.
W. said he based his conclusions on previously secret cables and memos that have emerged from behind the former Iron Curtain. He came across the information while researching his latest book on the life of Pope John Paul, “The End and the Beginning,” which looks at the pope’s final years and evaluates his legacy.
W. said.... He cataloged efforts by communist regimes to place spies in local Catholic hierarchies and the Vatican, to exploit the church’s moves toward openness and dialogue, to create ecumenical confusion and to compromise church leaders by planting false stories.
.... W. said Soviet bloc intelligence services tried to manipulate the debates of the Second Vatican Council for political ends, a process that continued as the “Ostpolitik” policy of the Vatican developed and prevailed. He said the Hungarian regime used the Vatican’s diplomatic opening to take control of the Catholic Church in the country; most bishops nominated after 1964 were cooperators with internal security and foreign intelligence services, he said.
At the Pontifical Hungarian Institute in Rome, all the rectors and half the students in the late 1960s were trained agents of Hungarian secret intelligence, he said. W. said communist moles were placed successfully at Vatican Radio, at the Vatican newspaper and in pontifical universities. When Pope John Paul II was elected, he took some counter-intelligence steps; for one thing, materials dealing with Poland were no longer archived in the Secretariat of State but were kept in the papal apartment “where there was no chance for mischief-makers to prowl around,” W. said.
When Pope John Paul met with leaders such as Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, the pope decided not to keep a written record of their conversations, so that the notes would not fall into the wrong hands. Instead, W. said, the pope and then-Msgr. Dziwisz would discuss the encounters, and the secretary kept notes in diaries that remained under his control.
W. said he thinks some lessons can be drawn by the church’s experience with European communism, as it looks to present challenges in the world’s remaining communist states and in Islamic states. For one thing, he said, Vatican efforts to reach beneficial compromises with communist powers “rarely, if ever, paid significant dividends.” He said a much more valuable witness was provided by church leaders who spoke courageously against the regimes, sometimes paying with their lives.
“Deeply committed and politically shrewd Christian pastors and laity eventually won out over communism. The blood of martyrs, however, was the seed of victory. Their sacrifice, and what we can learn from it about the cardinal virtue of fortitude -- courage -- must never be forgotten,” he said.

Brief Commentary
The above article sounds like an act of desperation to try to legitimize the “canonization” of pope JP-2, a.k.a. John-Paul 2, Karol Wyotya [Monday, October 16, 1978 - Friday, April 1, 2005]?
Unfortunately, there are a few problems with the above article.
The general tone of the above article gives one the distinct impression that the writer has totally capitulated to the NEW Theology Theologians prowess at conviently ignoring most of the History of the Church.
For example, did the writer clearly remind his readers that "Communism was condemned 35 times by Pope Pius XI, Achille Ratti and 123 times by Pope Pius XII" (Piers Compton, "The Broken Cross", Cranbrook, Western Australia: Veritas Pub. Co., 1984, p. 45)? No!
Did the writer clearly remind his readers that it was on the occasion of his eightieth birthday (November 25, 1961) that Pope 2nd John 23rd, the first Pope of the Satanic Vatican 2 church, received a telegram from Nikita Khrushchev offering his “congratulations and sincere wishes for good health and success in his noble aspirations to contribute to … peace on earth” (Mark Fellows, "Fatima in Twilight", p. 177. Piers Compton, "The Broken Cross", Cranbrook, Western Australia: Veritas Pub. Co., 1984, p. 44)? No!
Did the writer clearly remind his readers that it was on Wednesday, March 6, 1963, that Pope 2nd John 23rd, the first Pope of the Satanic Vatican 2 church received Aleksei Adzhubei and his Wife, Rada, in a special audience? No!
For the record, Rada was USSR Premier Khrushchev’s Daughter. Rada (Khrushchev’s Daughter) spoke about her meeting with Pope 2nd John 23rd, the first Pope of the Satanic Vatican 2 church:

According to some sources, Cardinal Casaroli was the inventor of a new Vatican foreign policy towards the Communist states of Eastern Europe, many of which had openly persecuted and killed Roman Catholic Bishops and Priests, not to mention the Laity. This anti-Catholic, very evil political policy is call “Ostpolitik”.
Why is “Ostpolitik” anti-Catholic and very evil?
First, What is “Ostpolitik”?
“Ostpolitik” (German for “Eastern Politics”) describes the politics of the “Change Through Rapprochement” principle which Communist Russian leader Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev [b. in Kalinovka, Russian Empire, on Tuesday, April 17, 1894 - d. in Moscow, Russia, Soviet Union on Saturday, September 11, 1971] offered the Vatican on the occasion of the 80th birthday of 2nd Pope John 23, on Sunday, November 25, 1962. Since that time, the Popes have become very cozy with the Communists.
There will always be people who will see nothing wrong with “Ostpolitik”. But they should prayerfully consider this impassioned rebuke at a clergy meeting which was personally made to pope Paul 6 [Giovanni Battista Montini. Friday, June 21, 1963 - Sunday, August 6, 1978] by a very credible witness who personally suffered at the hands of the Communist butchers and who witnessed the death of over 8 million Ukrainians - Roman Catholic Eastern Rite Uniates, along with some Eastern Rite Russian Orthodox:

“My saintly predecessor, the Servant of God Metropolitan [Andrey Sheptytsky] Andrej Szeptyckyj, died on November, 1, 1944. God gave me the difficult, but great, task of being his successor at the moment when our Ukrainian Catholic Church was faced with liquidation at the hands of the Soviets with the help of the Moscow Patriarchate.”
“On April 11, 1945 I was arrested together with all the other Bishops. Within a year more than 800 Priests followed us into imprisonment. From March 8 to 10, 1946 the illegal Synod of Lviv was convened and under atheistic pressure announced the “reunion” of the Ukrainian Catholic Church with the Soviet-controlled Orthodox Church.”
Ten Bishops Murdered or Otherwise Dead
“This ‘reunion’, and with it the outward liquidation of our Church, was put through with brutal force. The Bishops were deported to all parts of the Soviet Union and almost all without exception died or were killed in prison. Each of us had to go his own Way of the Cross. Now that I am 88 years old, memories of Jeniseisk, Mordovia, Polaria, Inta and Siberia have grown pale, but at that time it was a hard reality. I thank God that He gave me the strength to bear this cross for nearly 18 years, and I bow my head in reverence to my ten Brothers in the Episcopate, the more than 1,400 Priests, 800 Sisters and tens of thousands of the Faithful, who by their imprisonment sealed their loyalty to the Pope, the Apostolic See, and the universal Church with the sacrifice of their lives.”
Choice Between Apostasy and Deportation
“Our Priests were given the choice of either joining the ‘Church of the Regime’ and thereby renouncing Catholic unity, or bearing for at least ten years the harsh fate of deportation and all the penalties connected with it. The overwhelming majority of Priests chose the way of the Soviet Union's prisons and concentration camps.”
“From 1945 to 1955 one of our best Priests suffered in the camps of Potma, Sarovo, Javas, Uljanovo and Polivanovo. He wrote to his parishioners:
‘I accept this imprisonment as a penance and offer it up for you, that you may be spared this cross. I bless you and pray for you. Five times a day I pray for all my parishioners. On Sundays I celebrate the Divine Liturgy. Every day I pray a moleben (devotional prayer)... They wanted to force me to apostasy, but I refused... God’s cause must be victorious. Keep the Faith of your fathers!’“For those Priests who survived their ten years of imprisonment, the end of their persecution was by no means in sight. I was sent news about a monk in the Carpathians:”
‘In 1968 he was again sentenced to three years imprisonment for giving religious instruction to children. He served this sentence to the last day. In 1973 he was given another eighteen months imprisonment for having prayed at a woman’s sick-bed... It is so long since they last saw a Priest and heard the word of God. When the Priest leaves the church he is again a simple Soviet laborer. The Sacristan takes him home to lunch and invites a few other reliable persons. They ask Father Mykola to stay a few days as there are so many unbaptized children, also sick persons who want to confess and many graves to be Blessed. He stays in the village and carries out his Pastoral duties...”

Sometimes he secretly Baptizes even the children of party officials by night. In this way he and his friends travel through the Ukraine. He visits not only the Catholic Faithful but also the Orthodox. The whole Ukraine believes that the Holy Mother of God protects him and that Mary sends her Priests to comfort the poor people.”
A Way of the Cross Strewn with Corpses
“The same was experienced by one of our Catacomb Bishops, who was recently discovered while performing his duties. In vain the KGB used threats and torture to persuade him to cooperate. They also promised him a certain measure of freedom in an attempt to split the unity of the Church from within, but this too failed, because the Bishop knows that there is no other way for the Church than the Way of the Cross.”

The former professor and rector of our seminary at Lviv, Dr. Ivan Czorniak, who died a saintly death on 26th January, 1980 after a Calvary of 35 years, asked me in his last letter to do everything possible to influence public opinion, shake up the conscience of the world, demand the elementary right of religious freedom for all oppressed peoples in the Soviet Union, and to prevent the Church of Silence from being silenced to death by those who are well able to speak. Now that the day draws near on which God will call me from this life, I avail myself of this opportunity, which may be the last, to carry out my martyred brother’s last wish.”
“But it is not enough just to speak. You must pray and work, and above all you must lead a consistently Christian life. When at last the day comes on which our persecuted brothers can again admire moral strength, unshakable faith and defense of all human rights in the Church of the free world, on that day they will draw fresh courage to continue their struggle. Conclusion
The only logical conclusion that can me made on the evidence found above is that Agostino Cardinal Casaroli’s “Ostpolitik” efforts to reach workable compromises with Communist regimes has been a disaster for the Eastern Rite Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Agostino Cardinal Casaroli’s “Ostpolitik” was a pre-planned failure and an excuse to do nothing but talk. Interestingly, in the above article, the author actually admits - being careful not to use the actual word “Ostpolitik” - was a huge failure where the article states:

Although it is true that anyone can say anything, it is interesting how “the Vatican government” had ordered the assassination of JP-2 according to Mehmet Ali Agca who was arrested in St. Peter's Square after he shot JP-2 in 1981.
In an interview on Turkish national television, Agca claimed that
“The Vatican government decided on the Pope's assassination. They planned and organized it. The order to shoot the Pope was given by Vatican Secretary Cardinal Agostino Casaroli”.Whether this is or is not true, why was specific mention made of Vatican Secretary Cardinal Agostino Casaroli? In any event, this article adds credibility to former Communists, like Dr. Bella Dodd [b. at Picerno, Italy in October, 1904 - d. in April, 1969]. Mrs. Bella V. Dodd, a.k.a. Maria Asunta Isabella Visono [Baptized Maria Asunta Isabella in Picerno, Italy in October, 1904 - d. April, 1969], who was born to Rocco Visono and Teresa Marsica in Picerno, Italy, was a leader of the Communist Party of America (CPUSA - Communist Party U.S.A.) in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
In a lecture at Fordham University during that time, Dr. Dodd unveiled what would seem to be an uncanny prophecy of future chaos in the Church.
Speaking as a former high ranking official of the American Communist Party, in 1950, a dozen years before Synod Vatican 2, Dr. Dodd said in part:
“In the 1930’s we put eleven hundred men into the priesthood in order to destroy the [Roman Catholic] Church from within. The idea was for these men to be Ordained and progress to positions of influence and authority as Monsignors and Bishops. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a Catechism song for young Catholics.
It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a Religious reality which the children could remember.

Tears of the Virgin Mary Meet the Smoke of Satan
"On June 29, 1972, Paul VI spoke of God’s enemy supreme, that enemy of man called Satan, enemy of the Church. The smoke of Satan, warned Paul VI, has found its way into the Church through the fissures. It was an anguished warning that caused great shock and scandal, even within the Catholic world." (From an interview with the Vatican's chief exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth by Stefano Maria Paci.)
The Mystery
For years, many close to the Church had speculated on how an Evil - the Smoke of Satan - would manifest itself inside the Catholic Church - inside “certain chanceries” and then on a hot summer day in August - a clue.
On August 11, 1992, the long time Chancellor to the diocese of Arlington in Virginia, 53-year-old Monsignor W. R., walked into a nondescript cornfield in Berryville, Virginia, near the Holy Cross Trappist Monastery with a loaded shotgun and killed himself. His death would leave behind a long shadow of untold secrets – secrets of both good and evil- secrets whose scope, nearly twenty years later, are only now beginning to be fully understood.
During an implausible six months in 1992, Chancellor R.would quite literally come face to face with both the divine and the damned.
Before the Chancellor’s death, five months earlier, on March 6, 1992, a local television affiliate of CBS news aired a story, initially without much fanfare, about mysterious occurrences of weeping statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary taking place in Lake Ridge, Virginia, a quite suburb twenty miles south of the Nation’s Capitol.
The extraordinary events were mostly occurring at St. .... Church and its rectory. The reported weeping Madonnas were associated with a local priest named Father B. – they seemed to tear in his presence – who was also experiencing the “wounds of Christ” known as the Stigmata.
Many eye-witnesses to the events and those who have investigated the incident argue that never in the entire history of the Catholic Church, has there been a greater manifestation of the supernatural or momentous occurrence of weeping statues and other physical signs of God's presence through the Blessed Virgin Mary than what took place on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. in 1991 – 1993.
There were hundreds, if not thousands, of credible witnesses who saw the statues of the Virgin Mary weep before their eyes, including lawyers, military officers and government employees. Most significantly the Bishop of the Arlington Diocese.... along with Monsignor W. R. both witnessed the weeping Madonnas.
"On March 2, 1992 Father H. and Father B. met with Bishop K. at the Chancery along with Monsignor R. Reinecke. “Both prelates had Madonna statues. Bishop K. had two in his office and Monsignor R. brought one of his own. In addition, Fr B. had brought his little Fatima statue with him. All the statues wept. Reportedly, this convinced Bishop K. that the weeping is a genuine phenomenon and should be so treated.” (The Seton Miracles.)
Then suddenly, the Chancery Office to the diocese of Arlington, headed by Monsignor R., concerned about the “circus atmosphere” at the.... parish, with the blessing of the Bishop, coldly shut everything down. The statues of the Madonna, mind you, continued to weep, at times profusely, but as far as the diocese of Arlington and the Catholic Church were concerned the matter was officially over.
This decision, to many parishioners was not only profoundly sad but seemed to be an odd determination since only physical phenomena can be investigated. Reports of apparitions and locutions cannot be investigated. They can merely be assessed as to whether they are consistent with Catholic faith and morals.
The Smoke of Satan
Within months of dismissing the tears of Our Lady and silencing the talk of the highly publicized miraculous events, Monsignor W. R., would again make newspaper headlines - this time by committing suicide in the cornfield by the monastery.
After the suicide, at first, shocked priests, parishioners,and friends searched for answers. Many blamed themselves for failing to see Monsignor’s R. quiet despair.
But soon after the suicide a startling report surfaced in The Washington Post. J. McD., a former altar boy from another parish, claimed that Father R. sexually molested him twenty-five years ago and said he had confronted the priest about the incident two days before R. killed himself.
Then another bombshell. After reporting the allegations of sexual molestation, The Washington Post revealed that W. R. was also, scandalously, the person in charge of investigating claims of pedophilia for the Arlington Diocese.
In 2006 B. I. came forward saying that in the late 1960s, when she was ten years old, she had been sexually abused by Fr. R. She told The Washington Post that Father R. gave her family their first color TV set and within days, while watching the brand new TV in the basement, the molestation started. "I didn't tell anyone what happened," she said. "I was basically told that I'd go to hell if I did." I. said she no longer considers herself a practicing Catholic."I became so disillusioned," she said. "I realized I couldn't be a part of a church that wouldn't deal appropriately with these victims."
The Smoke of Satan had indeed entered the Church and the Blessed Virgin Mother wept for the loss of so many souls.
If an honest investigation determines that there were natural causes for all of the strange things that happened around Fr. B. great! - the matter could then be put to rest But we don't believe that will be the outcome of a true investigation. We don't see how such a conclusion would be possible. But, that's the purpose of investigating.

Thank you so much for this news! I was not aware of the people here in the U.S. involved in this in any way.
Historically, this story is somewhat misleading IF - what seems to be implied? - the author of this article is trying to say that this is the very first instance of a "weeping statue" of the Blessed Virgin Mary here in the U.S.A. - or perhaps anywhere?
The Smoke of Satan
But, before a brief look at this, I must first make mention of "the Smoke of Satan".
First - remember the old adage - "Where there is smoke there is fire! Fire causes smoke, smoke does not cause fire. This is what is so easily missed and too frequently ignored by various newspapers, magazines, and even the internet.
WHERE is the fire which is causing the smoke?
The answer is: THE VATICAN!
According to several sources, my research indicates that the actual quotation reads as follows:
“From somewhere or other the Smoke of Satan has entered the temple of God ... In the Church, too, this state of uncertainty reigns. We thought that after the Council [Synod Vatican 2] a day of sunshine would have dawned for the history of the Church. What dawned, instead, was a day of clouds and storms, of darkness, of searching and uncertainties” (Pope Paul 6, Giovanni Battista Montini [Friday, June 21, 1963 - Sunday, August 6, 1978], Thursday, June 29, 1972, Homily during the Mass for Sts. Peter & Paul, on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of his papal coronation, the last time a pope was crowned with the traditional Papal Tiara, the visible symbol of the Roman Catholic Office of the Papacy; emphasis added).Since Father Malachi Martin, S.J. wrote The Keys of This Blood, Father Malachi has revealed, in his later book, Windswept House, much more about this Satanic “Enthronement” Rite, which was supposedly held in the Vatican on Saturday, June 29, 1963 in Saint Paul's Chapel!!!“Indeed [Pope] Paul had alluded somberly to the smoke of Satan which has entered the Sanctuary. . . an oblique reference to an enthronement ceremony by SATANISTS in the Vatican” (Father Malachi Brendan Martin, S.J. Therefore, Lucifer - Satan - was ritually "enthroned" in Saint Paul's Chapel in the Vatican most probably at the very same time that P-6's coronation was happening? Weeping Pictures and Statues
Ever since the anti-Catholic Infiltrators into the Roman Catholic Church hijacked the Roman Catholic Church before, during, and even after Synod Vatican 2 [Thursday, October 11, 1962 A.D. - Wednesday, December 8, 1965 A.D.], various Crucifixes, as well as Pictures and Statues of Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary have been observed to "weep".
Many, many years ago, a book full of such photos was published. The last additions to the book included these holy objects weeping not human tears, but human blood!
I say "human tears" and "human blood" because, according to some of the data in this book, some of these "tears" were actually analyzed in various laboratories around the United States which result was - without exception - "human tears" and "human tears of blood"!

On Saturday, November 27, 1902 (N.B. This date was the 72nd anniversary of the Miraculous Medal Apparition [Saturday, November 27, 1830]), Our Lord warned of a NEW liturgy for the Mass which one day would be made up:
“I give you a warning. The disciples who are not of My Gospel are now working hard to remake according to their ideas, and under the influence of the enemy of souls [Satan], a Mass that contains words which are odious in My Sight. When the fatal hour arrives where the faith of My Priests are put to the test, it will be these texts that will be celebrated, in this second period.”On Tuesday, May 10, 1904, Our Lady described the NEWClergy and their NEW liturgy:“The first period is the one of My Priesthood, existing since Me. The second is the one of the persecution, when the enemies of the Faith and of Holy Religion will impose their formulas in the book of the second celebration. Many of My holy Priests will refuse this book, sealed with the words of the abyss. Unfortunately, amongst them are those who will accept it.”

October is the month of the Most Holy Rosary and so it comes as a timely reminder to read from a new book about yet another modern Rosary wonder.
The book is With Mary to Jesus, by Father Joseph M. Esper, and in it is related that "in 1978, the Rosary saved a college girl from dying at the hands of the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy. "He had just murdered or fatally injured all the other girls in a college sorority house, and then entered her room -- but some unexplainable force made him stop, drop his weapon, and flee.
"That particular girl had promised her grandmother she would pray the Rosary every night, and when Bundy entered her room, she was still clutching the Rosary beads in her hand." The date was January 15, the time approximately 3 a.m., when the horrific serial killer -- on the loose after a prison escape -- entered a sorority house and killed two sleeping women, Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman, before searching for other victims.
The unnamed girl awoke to a man standing over her with a bat. When she opened her hands, Bundy looked at the rosary beads in them, and fled, notes another account; such is the power of our Mother’s protective mantle! This was related to a priest, Monsignor William Kerr, of Tallahassee, Florida, who was called by police to accompany them to the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University -- where the girl was found catatonic and in fact would only speak to the priest (who died in May of 2009). Monsignor in his turn had related it to a priest named Gabriel Gillen, OP.
When Monsignor Kerr approached the near-catatonic girl, she told him her grandmother had made her promise before going off to college for the first time that she would pray the Rosary every night before bed for protection, even if she fell asleep praying it -- which she had that night; thus, when he entered, the beads were still clutched in her hands.
Bundy eventually confessed to over thirty murders, although the actual total remains unknown, with estimates of twenty-six to over a hundred (the general figure set around 35). Typically, notes a web biography, "Bundy would bludgeon his victims, then strangle them to death," sometimes along with sexual assault.
"Ironically, when Ted Bundy was on death row, awaiting execution for his crimes, he asked Monsignor Kerr to serve as a spiritual counselor, and the priest took the opportunity to ask about that terrible night," notes the book's reference section. "Bundy explained that when he entered the girl's room, he had fully intended on murdering her; some mysterious power was preventing him."
"There are very powerful promises attached to praying the Rosary," notes Father Esper. "And not only does it aid our own spiritual growth -- it also undermines the kingdom of Satan. The famous Vatican exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth testified, 'One day a colleague of mine heard the devil say during an Exorcism, Every Hail Mary is like a blow on my head. If Christians knew how powerful the Rosary was, it would be my end."
Padre Pio, who called the Rosary an extraordinarily powerful weapon against Satan, once said, "The Rosary is the weapon for these times."

It is so refreshing to realize that there are still a few good articles to be found in various places on the internet written by various Catholic authors who still try to keep what is sometimes called a "Catholic Mind"!

Historical Facts About the Rosary
1. Alexandre, a girl of noble station who had been converted by Saint Dominic who also enrolled her in the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary. After her death she appeared to Saint Dominic and told him she had been condemned to seven hundred years in Purgatory because of her own sins and of the sins which others had committed as the result of the bad example she gave them of her worldly ways.
So Alexandre implored Saint Dominic to ease her pains by his prayers and to ask the Confraternity members to pray for the same purpose. Saint Dominic did as she asked. Two weeks later she appeared to him, more radiant than the sun, having been quickly delivered from Purgatory through the Daily Rosary recited by each of the members of the Confraternity which they had said for her.
She also told Saint Dominic that the Holy Souls in Purgatory had given her a message to give to Saint Dominic.
The message of the Poor, Suffering Souls in Purgatory to Saint Dominic was that they begged Saint Dominic:
1) To please continue to preach devotion to the Most Holy Rosary.2. One day in 1460, Blessed Alan de la Roche, O.P. was offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Catholic Traditional Mass. Our Lord, Who wanted to spur him to preach the Holy Rosary, spoke to Blessed Alan from the Sacred Host.2) To please beg all of their relatives to offer their daily Rosaries for them.
3) To tell their relatives that they would abundantly reward these same relatives when these Poor, Suffering Souls came into their Glory in Heaven.

"How can you crucify Me again so soon?"Christ said:"What did You say, Lord?" asked Blessed Alan, horrified.
"You crucified Me once before by your sins. I would willingly be crucified again rather than have My Father offended by the sins You used to commit. If you only did this, you could teach many souls the right path and lead them away from sin. Our Lady also spoke to him one day to inspire him to preach the Holy Rosary more and more.

"You were a great sinner in your youth, but I obtained the Grace of your conversion from my Son. Had such a thing been possible, I would have liked to have gone through all kinds of suffering to save you because converted sinners are a glory to me. And I would have done this also to make you worthy of preaching my Rosary far and wide."Saint Dominic also appeared to Blessed Alan as well and told him of the great results of his own Rosary ministry - of how, when still in this life, he had preached the Holy Rosary unceasingly, that his sermons had borne great fruit, and that many people had been converted during his missions as the result of his preaching devotion to the Holy Rosary.
Saint Dominic said to Blessed Alan:
"See the wonderful results that I have had through preaching the Holy Rosary! You and all those who love Our Lady ought to do the same so that, by means of this holy practice of the Rosary, you may draw all people to the real science of the virtues."This is, very briefly, how Saint Dominic established devotion to the Most Holy Rosary and how Blessed Alan de la Roche restored it.
3. During his Pontificate, the Roman Catholic Pope Saint Pius V found Europe to be in a devastating moral state due to its having been partially destroyed by the ex-Roman Catholic Bishops and Priests who threw out the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and replaced it by a mere memorial supper meal anti-Catholic "mass" in which Altars were ripped out of churches and replaced by meal tables with the heretical officiant facing the people (history repeats itself today!), by ecclesiastical corruption, and by the threat of the Turkish invasion of Western Europe.
Seeing that things were only getting worse, he continued to say his daily Rosary. At the last minute, he was able to call the countries of Europe to unite together and to pray the Holy Rosary. The State of Sonora is angry at the influx of Mexicans into Mexico . It seems that many Mexican illegal's are returning to their hometowns and the officials in the Sonora state government are ticked off. A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to state that Arizona 's new Employer Sanctions Law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state.
At a news conference, the legislators said that Sonora, - Arizona's southern neighbor, - made up of mostly small towns, - cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools that it will face as Mexican workers return to their hometowns from the USA without jobs or money.
The Mexican legislators are angry because their own citizens are returning to their hometowns, placing a burden on THEIR state government. "How can Arizona pass a law like this?' asked Mexican Rep Leticia Amparano-Gamez, who represents Nogales ."
There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona ,' she said, speaking in Spanish.
"Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and who were sending money to their families return to their home-towns in Sonora without jobs," she said. "We are one family, socially and economically," she said of the people of Sonora and Arizona.

The United States is a sovereign nation, not a subsidiary of Mexico , and its taxpayers are not responsible for the welfare of Mexico 's citizens.
It's time for the Mexican government, and its citizens, to stop feeding parasitically off the United States and to start taking care of their own needs.

A few months ago, President Obama was reading a report that there were over 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado.
Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the cattle guards, i.e. 50,000 cattle guards, immediately!!
Before the Secretary of the Interior could respond and presumably try to straighten him out, Vice-President, Joe Biden, intervened with a request that before any cattle guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining.
I am very surprised that Obama, who had been a Senator in the State of Illinois, which has thousands of farms, most of which have cattle on them, obviously knows nothing at all about Illinois farms and/or cattle ranches in the Western and South Western U.S.A.!
Because IF Obama was "in touch" with the farmers of Illinois, IF Obama was "in touch" with the cattle ranchers in the U.S.A., and IF Obama had visited many farms in Illinois as a Senator of Illinois should be expected to do, and IF Obama had visited many cattle ranches in the U.S.A., sooner or later - somewhere?! - he would have seen, and probably even walked over, many cattle guards!!!
Cattle Guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings, in dug-out places in the roads adjacent to highways (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle from crossing over that area. For some reason the cattle will not step onto the Cattle Guards, most probably because they fear getting their legs caught between the rails?

A promotional trailer for “Machete” called - a “Cinco De Mayo Message to Arizona” - was released online on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 A.D. It contains very offensive language, exceedingly extreme violence, and classical Communist-style propaganda of hate, violence, and demonic evil which, with Satanic fury and racial bigotry, deliberately promotes racial terrorism against whites by deliberately creating a false "persecution complex—a warped belief that the white man’s prejudices, the white man’s system, the white man’s government is responsible for everything. Such a belief is the way the Reds [i.e. Communists] plan it, for the next logical step is hate that can be used by the Reds [i.e. Communists] to accomplish their ends" (Manning Johnson, Color, Communism and Common Sense, Chapter Seven, CREATING HATE)!
The only conclusion a rational person is forced to objectively make is this: said film, based upon its promotional trailer, is a DELIBERATE HATE CRIME against whites and those responsible for this racial hate crime should be arrested and prosecuted because this film is not only a racial hate crime, but this film also incites and promotes mob violence, rioting, and killing sprees which it deliberately glamorizes to teenagers and young adults who are too easily controlled and otherwise manipulated by negative perverse psychological manipulation by certain evil "puppet-masters" trying to control those who are too immature to always make - in every case without even one exception - a rational, objective analysis of a specific situation which, in the case of said film trailer, seeks to take advantage of one or more pre-existing cultural, economic, and/or social vicissitudes by means of mindless emotionalism bereft of a conscience solidly formed on the basis of the Ten Commandments of Almighty God and Catholic Traditional teachings of ethics which are based upon Truth being absolute, not relative.
Why? Because “God is Truth” (Saint Thomas Aquinas, O.P., [b. 1225 A.D. in Rocca Secca, Naples, Italy - d. Wednesday, March 7, 1274 A.D., in Fossa Nuova, Italy], Doctor of the Church, Summa Theologica, Part I, Question 16, Article 5; Summa Theologica, Part II-II, Question 93, Article 2, Reply to Objection 2. Summa Contra Gentiles, Book I, Chapter 60), which means that God can neither deceive nor be deceived, and because by nature and by definition “Truth cannot be Truth’s contrary” (Saint Thomas Aquinas, O.P., Summa Contra Gentiles, Book IV, 8) - since “Every Truth without exception, and whoever may utter it, is from the Holy Ghost” (Saint Thomas Aquinas, O.P., Summa Theologica, Part I-II, Question 109, Article 1, Reply to Objection 1).
Because “God is Truth”, and because God does not change, this logically means that Truth itself is absolute, immutable, and unchangeable - not relative as heretics teach by assaulting the Truth about Truth - for it is of Divine Revelation that God does not change.

This promotional trailer for “Machete” was released 24 hours after a still-undetermined white powder spilled out of an envelope addressed to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer was opened by a staffer. The State Capitol building in Phoenix, Arizona was temporarily closed as a result. Hazmat teams went throughout the governor's offices. Although no ill effects have been reported, both the FBI and Arizona state police are investigating this event.
Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2009, said he received “tons of death threats” while he was in office. During his public speeches, he frequently wore a bulletproof vest. He is also quoted as saying that:
“It’s pretty ugly out there. Half the time that’s the way all of us are depicted: corrupt, no good, racist.”Regarding the trailer for “Machete”, he said:
“The racists who made that trailer, they are as racist as anything I have ever seen!”Machete’s promotional trailer depicts a machete-wielding “vigilante” who leads a racial war of terrorism with gratuitous violence - an endless killing spree - and a massacre against Texas authorities reminiscent of the classical Communist divide and conquer strategy.

By the Grace of God, two Americans, of Mexican descent, who are crew members on the set of this propagandized hate film, are very upset about the anti-white hatred promoted by this bigoted film, fearing that this film will most probably result in a suppressive reaction by society against Americans of Mexican descent.
Machete’s promotional trailer has the lead character - Machete Cortez - hired to assassinate a U.S. Senator from Texas, rallying Texans against illegals - people who have broken the law of the United States of America by illegally crossing the U.S./Mexican border without first obtaining the necessary paperwork to enter the United States legally.
The film script has the anti-immigration U.S. Senator, played by Robert De Niro, speaking to a group of people saying, in part:
“We are at war! Every time an illegal dances across our border, it is an act of aggression against this sovereign state [of Texas] - an overt act of terrorism.”At some point in time, the lead character - Machete Cortez - realizes that he has been double-crossed. In other words, he was set-up as a patsy for a failed-assassination attempt.
This reminds one of how Lee Harvey Oswald claimed he was set-up as a “patsy” for the actual assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Some sources claim that they have proof that the so-called professional “hit squad” that did the actual assassination of President JFK was organized and funded by the then Vice-President, Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. True or False?
In other words, the lead character of this hate film - Machete Cortez - according to the film script itself - is to be blamed on what the script identifies as “Mexicans” and “cucarachas.”
This knowledge triggers the said film character - Machete Cortez - to retaliate by a “killing spree”. He incites a mob to join him in this butchery of whites by provoking the mob to a frenzy of killing by yelling:
“We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us!”The promotional trailer for “Machete” depicts a crazed mob of Mexican descent holding up machetes in preparation for the slaughter of all white people!
But it is against the laws of the United States of America to control a crowd in such a way that it is turned into a mob which is then incited to riot.
But, what is the difference if the demagogue who incites a mob to riot is a person who physically stands before a mob and incites them to riot and to kill, or a fictional film demagogue whose function is to deliberately provoke and to incite the movie audience itself to become a crowd of rioters and killers!?
The young look for role models and are easily manipulated and frequently desire to imitate - to emulate - a certain movie character with which they closely identify! This group is obviously the target audience for this movie!
This deplorable hate-filled movie of horrific violence could easily spark another Civil War and divide the U.S.A. so that this country will no longer exist because it has been sold out by its traitorous leaders who will answer to Almighty God for their virtual mountains of Mortal Sins for continually breaking their solemn and sacred Oaths of Office “to preserve and protect” the U.S.A.!
The bottom line is - there is no difference because the ultimate result is identical - crowds of rioters and killers going about seeking their victims and killing them!!!
But, will the United States Government choose to turn a blind eye to those who are ultimately responsible for inciting movie audiences who see this film to become crowds of rioters and killers, and not to enforce its own laws about such things, just as the United States Government continues to choose - everyday - not to enforce its own laws concerning illegals??!!
For how much longer can the United States of America remain an actual country when its own government refuses to enforce its own laws - or rather, to selectively enforce it own laws - because it does very little to enforce its own just laws against the illegals who flood through the U.S./Mexican border every day, but yet it ferociously enforces its unjust laws which protect the “right” to murder unborn children!!!
“Machete” proves all too evocative of the infamous “1915 Plan of San Diego” which was an aborted German plan to foment an uprising by Americans of Mexican descent, Native American Indians, and Negroes in the American Southwest. The plan called for the killing of all white males and the use of an all-out race war to re-conquer the Southwest.

Manning R. Johnson was an American of Negro ancestry who loved his country, and he loved it enough that he saw beyond Uncle Tom—and what he saw there was Uncle Sam.
A Communist of stature within the international conspiracy, Manning R. Johnson had the strength to renounce Communism when he discovered for certain that its purpose was to use the Negro as a device to help commit all Americans of all colors to a slavery far worse than anything the pre-emancipation Americans of Negro descent had ever experienced.
In the perjury trial of Labor Leader Harry Bridges in 1949, he was a government witness (Time Magazine, Monday, December 26, 1949). In its "You'd Be Thin, Too" article of December 26, 1949, Time Magazine began and continued with the following:
"With the Government asking the questions, husky, big-jawed Manning R. Johnson made an effective prosecution witness in the perjury trial of Labor Leader Harry Bridges. Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary
Convinced that the cardinal was "the center of the counter-revolutionary forces in Hungary," the Communist authorities wanted him. The immediate issue was an order that Hungary's 4,813 Catholic schools be nationalized. The Cardinal had driven from village to village urging people to ignore the Communist lies [shades of Machete] and refuse to give up their schools and their land. The police had responded by seizing his sound truck and portable generator. At his order, church bells tolled.
Although the publication of his last Pastoral Letter was banned, one copy made it to The Voice of America radio broadcast, and the Communists shouted "subversive activity."
The November 1948 letter ended:
"I stand for God, for the Church and for Hungary. . . . Compared with the sufferings of my people, my own fate is of no importance. I do not accuse my accusers. ...I pray for those who, in the words of Our Lord, 'know not what they do.' I forgive them from the bottom of my heart."Explaining that neither he nor the Church had provoked the enmity of the Hungarian government, he wrote in an open letter in December:
"Communism [The propaganda found in Machete.] is an atheistic ideology: hence by its very nature it is opposed to the spirit of the Church."On the day of his arrest, police cars surrounded his residence. An account of the event notes that his Mother and some of his faithful aides were with him when the boisterous police came for him. As the officers approached, he scribbled a note telling his fellow Priests to be skeptical if they heard that he had "resigned" or "confessed," because it would be merely a sign of "human frailty."
He donned his poorest Bishop's robe and his simplest Bishop's ring. In his pocket was a picture of Jesus crowned with thorns. The giver had inscribed it, devictus vincit - "defeated, He is victorious." That picture would give him comfort in his dark hours.
With time for only a quick good-bye to his aged Mother, he was whisked away at night.
A long list of charges had been carefully concocted - lies made to seem logical. His accusers twisted his words, took them out of context and used forgery to produce documents of confession that they said he had signed.
Every night he was beaten. At daybreak, dressed in clown clothes, he was taken for questioning. For a time he was strong - some say obstinate - and he would not "cooperate." He ate little because he knew the food contained mind-altering drugs, and if in exhaustion he began to doze, he was prodded awake.
In February 1949, body and mind broken, Cardinal Mindszenty underwent what he later called a "show trial." The truth was never sought. He was accused of more than 40 "crimes," the most notable of which were foreign-currency abuses (yes. he had sought American intervention for his people and for the Church's monetary holdings), sabotage of Hungarian land reform (yes, he had tried to help his people keep their land and their churches), and conspiracy with the Hapsburgs (yes, he had spoken against the Communist People's Party [more shades of Machete]).
"I am guilty on principle and in detail of most of the accusations made," the Cardinal said shakily. He disowned the disavowal he had written earlier. When asked why he wrote it, he answered feebly, "I didn't see certain things as I see them now."
This was not the voice of the strong man who had been arrested. It was obvious he had undergone unspeakable torture.
The prosecutor's summation stated that Cardinal Mindszenty had confessed to inciting "the American imperialists to declare war on our country." He was falsely found guilty of treason.
Although that crime called for hanging, instead he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The government didn't want him seen as a martyr or hero of freedom.
The verdict and sentence were heard around the free world. It wasn't just the Hungarians - who saw him as "their priest" - who were horrified, but people in Western Europe and the United States as well.
Pope Pius XII called Cardinal Mindszenty's arrest a:
"serious outrage which inflicts a deep wound . . . on every upholder of the dignity and liberty of man."He defended the Cardinal's right to oppose the government when it contradicted "divine and human rights." The Vatican called for Catholics everywhere to fight against a "pathological" system that flagrantly abuses human rights.
New York's Francis Cardinal Spellman roared:
"If this be treason, to deny allegiance to atheistic Communist government - then thank God Cardinal Mindszenty confessed to treason."President Harry Truman called the incident "infamous." and former prime minister Winston Churchill condemned it. Nine Hungarian diplomats in the United States resigned, ashamed.
After the sentencing, Cardinal Mindszenty was shuffled from prison to prison until the Hungarian uprising in 1956, when he was freed briefly as shown in the above newspaper photograph.
After the Communists regained control, he lived in voluntary house arrest in the U.S. embassy in Budapest until 1971, dismissing requests from the Vatican that he leave his homeland.
The aging Cardinal eventually became a tragic and pathetic figure, a witness to the evils of atheistic Communism, a thorn in the side of the Communist Hungarian government. In an effort to be rid of him, it offered him safe passage to Austria. He declined.
The Cardinal also became an embarrassment to the Vatican whose actions condemned the official pro-Communist policies of Ostpolitik by the 2nd Pope John 23, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli [Tuesday, October 28, 1958 - Monday, June 3, 1963]and by the Communist Pope, Paul 6, Giovanni Battista Montini [Friday, June 21, 1963 - Sunday, August 6, 1978].
Finally, somehow Paul 6 "persuaded" Cardinal Mindszenty who thereupon reluctantly moved to the Vatican, where he stayed for only two short months before taking up residence in Vienna in 1971.
In his final years, Cardinal Mindszenty traveled extensively to publicize the plight of the Hungarian Catholics who were being victimized by the cruel Communists.
Cardinal Mindszenty died in Vienna in 1975 and was buried there. His body was later reburied in Esztergom, Hungary.
The official pro-Communist policies - called Ostpolitik - by the 2nd Pope John 23, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli [Tuesday, October 28, 1958 - Monday, June 3, 1963] were followed by the even more pro-Communist Ostpolitik acts of the Communist Pope, Paul 6, Giovanni Battista Montini [Friday, June 21, 1963 - Sunday, August 6, 1978].
Avro Manhattan calls him a Marxist Pope and calls his Populo progresso the most radical Encyclical ever promulgated up to that time.
Throughout the Communist world, whenever Communist Pope Paul 6 nominated Bishops or Cardinals, he first had to get the approval of his Communist bosses. Paul 6 also personally made sure that those whom he chose for the South American countries had leftist orientation.
This fact was verified by Cuba's Communist Premier, Fidel Castro:

Nikolai Viktorovich Podgorny [b. on February 18, 1903 - d. on January 12, 1983] was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1965 to 1977.
An engineer, trained at the Technological Institute of the Food Industry in Kiev, he became the deputy commissar of the Ukrainian food industry before becoming a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1950. He was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1956 and of its Presidium, later called the Politburo, in 1960.
In 1965 he became chairman of the presidium of the Supreme Soviet, or chief of state, succeeding Anastas Mikoyan. Podgorny was relieved of his chairmanship and removed from the Politburo during a 1977 power struggle with Leonid Brezhnev.
In 1967, he delivered an false intelligence report to Egyptian Vice President Anwar Sadat which claimed that Israeli troops were massing along the Syrian border, just before the out break of the Six-Day War.

The Shroud of Turin, the 14- by 4-foot linen believed by some to have been wrapped around Jesus after the crucifixion, might not be a fake after all, according to new research.
The director of one of three laboratories that dismissed the shroud as a medieval artifact 20 years ago has called for the science community to re-investigate the linen's authenticity.
"With the radiocarbon measurements and with all of the other evidence which we have about the shroud, there does seem to be a conflict in the interpretation of the different evidence," said Christopher Ramsey, director of England's Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, which carried out radiocarbon dating tests on the cloth in 1988.

What did Jesus look like? Artists, scholars and millions of Christians around the world have been pondering the question for centuries. On Tuesday of Holy Week, March 30, at 9/8c, the HISTORY channel viewers got closer to an answer than ever before, thanks to a special two-hour event.
The Real Face of Jesus follows a team of graphic experts as they use cutting-edge 3D software to bring a holy relic known as the Shroud of Turin to life. Many believe Jesus Christ was buried in this ancient linen cloth, which bears traces of blood and the faint, ghostly image of a man. With the help of modern technology, did the HISTORY channel finally unlock the secrets of one of the world’s most scrutinized and controversial artifacts?
To attempt this feat, HISTORY channel turned to computer graphics artist Ray Downing of Studio Macbeth, who used photographs and digital animation to reconstruct Abraham Lincoln in 2009. As Ray and his team grappled with the task, the program delved into the Shroud of Turin’s long history, along with the many perplexing questions that centuries of scientific research have failed to settle.
How, for instance, did the figure’s imprint appear on the cloth? Some people think it was a burst of intense light at the moment the Soul of Christ returned to His body in the tomb at the moment of His Resurrection from the dead. But neither types of light sources can explain this very fragile image which "lays" on top of the cloth.
Perhaps the answer is to be found instead in heat and/or radiation?
The program showed how it is possible to extract 3D information from a two-dimensional piece of ancient linen.
In The Real Face of Jesus, the HISTORY channel unveils the fruit of many months of labor, made possible by sophisticated computer tools in very capable hands: an accurate depiction of the man many believe to be Jesus Christ. For the devout and curious alike, this is a compelling story of transformation—a fascinating journey from the realm of creativity and imagination into the domain of science and technology.
One of the experts on the Shroud of Turin claims to have studied many pictures depicting some of its history, specifically when it was publicly exposed for the veneration of the Catholic Faithful. The expert takes the position that in every picture of the exposition of the Shroud of Turin, it was always - without one exception - held in the same exact corner from which a small piece of it was cut in 1988 for carbon-dating which indicated it was from somewhere around the 13th to 14th Centuries.
However, the expert says that the radiocarbon measurements are not accurate because the small piece of cloth that was tested was from the corner where it was handled the most over many centuries based upon the drawings of the frequent exposition of this cloth.
Another reason why the radiocarbon measurements are not accurate and that the Shroud of Turin was not made in the 13th or 14th Centuries as the radiocarbon measurements indicate is because of a drawing of the Shroud of Turin, that was found in an Hungarian prayer book which it is known for certain dates from no later than the 7th Century, A.D., and which drawing shows several holes in the Shroud of Turin then that are still in the same exact location as they are in the same Shroud of Turin today! This drawing was obviously down by a person who actually saw the Shroud of Turin up close and who drew what this person saw at a date no later than the 7th Century!
Other experts stated emphatically on this TV special program that there are no signs whatsoever of any kind of paint, or anything else, having been used to make this image - which is actually a negative image - not a positive image. In other words, the actual image is not like a photograph but rather like a negative that is developed in a photographic darkroom - something apparently that has never been found in any drawings, paintings, etc. before, and actually even after, modern photography was invented in the 1820's with the first permanent photographs.

MOEHLIN, Switzerland - Reports today of a miraculous survival in Switzerland.
Swiss police say a baby suffered little more than a bump after being blown onto railway tracks and being run over by a train.
The incident happened Wednesday in the northeastern Swiss town of Moehlin, close to the German border.
Police say the six-month-old was in a buggy when a strong gust of wind blew it off a platform and into the path of an oncoming train.
Luckily the infant fell between the rails. Rescuers heard the baby's cries and found it lying beneath the train, virtually unharmed.
The child and its mother were taken to hospital and treated for shock before being released.
"There wasn't much left of the buggy," said Bernhard Graser of the Aargau cantonal police.

According to a report on OneNewsNow.com, Brenda Biesterfeld discovered the man viewing images of nak-- boys who appeared to be 9 to 13 years old. She reported the incident to her supervisor, Judi Hill, who told Biesterfeld to pass the man a note that said he would be banned if he did it again. Biesterfeld was also told to make note of it in the man's library record. Biesterfeld asked Hill "[A]nd after I do that, Judi, then I need to contact the police, right?"
And the answer was no.
Biesterfeld asked again to make sure she heard right, and Hill told her it was more common than she thought. After thinking it over at home Biesterfeld decided to call the police and report it.
The police told her to call them if and when it happened again, and she did. The man came back to the library and was arrested while viewing child p---. Upon further investigation, more child p--- was found at the man's house as well.
After this service to the public, Biesterfeld was told that she had no loyalty to the county and was fired from the library.
This has been verified by the FBI (their link is included below.) Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.
The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo! your identity was just stolen.
The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states. This swindle is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.
The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Ford meets conditions; AFA suspends boycott.
AFA is suspending its two year boycott of Ford Motor Company. The conditions of the original agreement presented in fall 2005 have been met. We reached the conclusion that Ford had met the conditions of the agreement based on monitoring for several months. Individuals are free to purchase Ford vehicles again.
Your support of the boycott played a key role in convincing Ford to cease its significant support of the homosexual agenda. During the 24 months the boycott was in effect, Ford sales dropped an average of 8% per month. The boycott was not entirely responsible for the drop in sales, but it played a very significant role.
A total of 780,365 individuals signed AFA's Boycott Ford petition.
The original agreement contained four items:
1. Ford would not renew current promotions or create future incentives that give cash donations to homosexual organizations based on the purchase of a vehicle.A few minor issues remain, and we will continue to bring these to the attention of Ford. But basically Ford has met the terms of the agreement. We are therefore suspending the boycott.2. Ford would not make corporate donations to homosexual organizations that, as part of their activities, engage in political or social campaigns to promote civil unions or same-sex marriage.
3. Ford would stop giving cash and vehicle donations or endorsements to homosexual social activities such as Gay Pride parades.
4. Ford would cease all advertising on homosexual Web sites and through homosexual media outlets (magazines, television, radio) in the U.S. with the exception of $100,000 to be used by Volvo. The Volvo ads would be the same ads used in the general media and not aimed at the homosexual community specifically.
Summary: Fraudulent phishing e-mails claiming to be from, or related to, financial institutions involved in high-profile mergers, acquisitions or failures are reportedly in circulation.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is warning consumers, businesses and financial institutions to be aware of fraudulent e-mails allegedly from, or related to, financial institutions that have been the subject of recent news stories. Phishing e-mails often incorporate aspects of high-profile news stories – such as bank mergers, acquisitions and failures – to create a sense of urgency and legitimacy for requesting information or action.
These types of fraudulent e-mails may request recipients to verify computer logon credentials, update personal information, or activate new online security features. The fraudulent e-mails may include a link that directs the recipient to a fraudulent or "spoofed" Web site that looks similar to the subject institution's legitimate Web site. Once there, users may be prompted to provide information about online banking credentials or other personal and confidential information that could be used to gain unauthorized access to online banking services or perpetrate identity theft. These spoofed Web sites may also direct the user to download software updates or digital certificates, which may actually be malicious code or software attempting to collect online banking credentials or other personal and confidential information.
Consumers, businesses and financial institutions should be wary of unsolicited e-mails purportedly from financial institutions recently in the news and take the following precautions:
* Do not follow Web links in unsolicited e-mails from apparent financial institutions. Instead, use Web browser bookmarks or type your institution's Web address into the browser address bar when accessing your bank's Web site or online banking services.For additional information about safe online banking and avoiding online scams, visit: http://www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/guard/* Always use anti-virus software and ensure the virus signatures are automatically updated. Ensure the computer operating system and common software applications are up-to-date with security patches installed.
* Do not open unsolicited or unexpected e-mail attachments claiming to be from a financial institution because of the risk of malicious code or software. As a precaution, call the financial institution using an appropriate telephone number, such as one from an account statement, to validate the e-mail and attached file before opening any attachment.

Spain Awakens Against Abortion

This Saturday, Madrid became the Capital of Life for several hours, when over 1.5 million people gathered to protest the new abortion bill that Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and the socialists want to approve in the Congress.
Many aspects make this march noteworthy. The first is the unity displayed. More than 40 pro-life groups from the whole of Spain coordinated this march to send a message to the Spanish government that a very large portion of society disagreed with this new law. These same pro-life groups have opposed every abortion since 1985, when the previous socialist administration first legalized abortion in Spain.
Secondly, the 1.5 million protestors send a strong message that public opinion is firmly against abortion. The protesters constitute more than 3% of Spain's 48 million citizens, all gathered in the capital to make a stand for Life. Consider the results of a poll by the Spanish Family Forum, which show that only 21% of Spaniards condone unrestricted abortion, while 27% seek a full abortion ban, and 50% personally oppose abortion but think it should be allowed in certain cases. This reinforces the findings of PRI's own public opinion studies: the media battle has been lost by President Zapatero and his Socialist Party.
But the public outcry against abortion alone does not constitute reform.
Many times we in the pro-life movement have thought that getting public opinion on our side would be sufficient to effect real change. This is not the case. Only 24 hours after the Madrid march, representatives of the Socialist Party in Congress spoke of continuing with the bill, regardless of the outcry, and sadly, they can force it if they choose. They have a majority due to an alliance with small portions of left-leaning representatives who have their own interest in the abortion bill. This new pro-life shift in popular opinion can't beat the mathematical advantage of the abortion axis in Congress.
However, this very crisis is causing many citizens to make the defense of life and family a central issue in the upcoming Spanish elections, who will not content themselves with simply voting for the "lesser evil." Over the next two and a half years leading up to the elections the Life issue will definitely be a defining one for politicians. Already, President Zapatero has become very unpopular with the Spanish people on account of his commitment to passing this abortion bill. Some analysts believe that the abortion issue will seriously hurt the Socialist Party in the next elections.
This issue connects us to the other major party of Spain, the Popular Party. Some of its leaders joined in the march. Many of the pro-lifers were uncomfortable with the presence of former President José María Aznar. Though he now marches with pro-lifers, back when he was in office neither he nor anyone in his party took real action against abortion. In the final analysis, though, his fellow marchers were positive about his attendance, as it allows pro-lifers to make definite demands for the upcoming election, and they form a large majority of the Spanish people.
Today, pro-lifers in Spain have three conditions that a politician must meet to be considered a "Friend of Life." First, he must take action to get the abortion bill removed from parliamentary debate. Second, if the bill is approved into law, he must bring an appeal to the Constitutional Court. Third, he must publicly promise to fight against abortion if elected.
For now, the Popular Party has agreed to the first and second conditions. On the third, however, they have yet to comment. Fortunately, pro-life groups now know their strength, given the massive turnout at the march, and these groups are going to make their demands heard in the next election.
Just recently, this newfound power of the pro-life people of Spain showed itself, when a slew of e-mails from members of "Right to Life" convinced the Popular Party to postpone a meeting scheduled for October 17 in Barcelona. This seems to indicate that Spanish society has grown tired of abortion, and is now capitalizing on the great power of its unity to effect change.
On October 16, at the request of the Spanish Family Forum and the National Association of Parents in Catholic Schools, the Efrat Institute published an informative piece called "The Abortion Business in Spain," which revealed that the abortion industry has evaded paying some 50 million euros in taxes since 2007. (The Efrat Institute is a consulting and research organization concerned with the activities of public life.) The president of the Efrat Institute, David del Fresno, states: "The 'abortion industry' is the only industry that has public evidence of earning up to twice what they declare on their taxes without the Treasury at least opening an investigation. It's unusual. If a normal citizen shows any disproportion between his income and his possessions, a Treasury investigator starts an audit immediately. The abortion clinics seem to be immune to this logic.
The pro-life and pro-family groups are demanding that the Treasury Minister investigate the 80 registered abortion clinics in order uncover and end the fraud. Should the Minister fail to open these investigations, there would be yet another black mark against the Socialist government on Spain's election day.
Much has been said about the October 17th protest, especially in the pro-socialist media in Spain. But as always we believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. So we invite you to watch the video and make your own conclusions. Spain is waking up and her hopes for the future are as big as this march in Madrid.

Dear Father Michael,
As a single and widowed Mother, who is disabled, I had been under a lot stress which caused me to have a lot of chest pains and to feel extremely ill, overwhelmed, and exhausted most of the time.
I then decided to request frequent Holy Communion from you. After receiving Holy Communion from you, I noticed that a lot of very positive changes began to happen in my life.
For example, in a short period of time, all of my chest pain, anxieties, illnesses, fears, and nightmares left me.
I now have a total sense of peace and well-being, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
My overall health has improved, I am much happier, much more hopeful, and even have more energy.
I am now able to handle a tremendous amount of stress in my life because of my frequent Holy Communions.
In addition, God the Holy Ghost has been frequently enlightening me by giving me practical solutions to my daily problems, including unexpected emergencies.
Plus, the Holy Ghost is helping me to cope with all of my problems as a single and widowed Mother.
I have also seen a big improvement in my relationships with my children, grand-children, great-grand-children, as well as family members, and friends. The Holy Ghost has been guiding me on the correct words to use, and the communication techniques to use, in dealing with difficult people. As a result, these difficult people are becoming more calm and easier to deal with and work with.
As a "bonus", I have discovered that I now have the Spiritual strength, with the help of God's Graces. to resist all kinds of temptations, ever remaining calm under even the most trying of conditions.
As an "extra-special bonus", so to speak, our Eucharistic Lord has also protected me in various ways, and has just recently protected one of my Sons from several severe accidents. And has also given me many small miracles in my life, and three really big ones!
I am publicly thanking the Holy Ghost and the good Lord for the many Gifts They have given me as the result of my receiving the Holy Eucharist from you on a regular basis.

I began my conversation with the monsignor indicated to me by Cardinal Gagnon as he lay dying with the simple fact of Gagnon's passing in August of 2007.
We spoke in Italian. The conversation took place in the fall of 2007.
"I was sorry to hear of Cardinal Gagnon's passing," I said.
"Yes, so was I," the monsignor said. "He was a great servant of the Church. He suffered a great deal."
"I knew him," I said. "He was always helpful to me, especially when I was beginning."
"He was a kind man."
And then we began our usual conversation, on the state of the Church, the latest news in the Vatican, and so forth. Our conversation turned naturally to the publication on July 7, 2007, of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, which promoted wider use of the old rite of the Mass.
"I'm confused," I said.
"Why?" he said.
"The whole thing," I said.
"What happened at the Second Vatican Council, the Constitution on the Liturgy, the Commission established to revise the Mass, Monsignor Annibale Bugnini.
[Ordained in 1936 and named archbishop in 1972, he was secretary of the commission that worked on the reform of the Catholic liturgy that followed the Second Vatican Council.]And now, 40 years later, we seem to be still in a state of confusion. It seems like all the things we held sacred — all the things we loved — have been trampled upon."
"You are too gloomy," he said, waving his hand dismissively.
"Yes, things have been trampled upon, but the essential remains. Don't lose heart."
"Does the essential remain?" I asked.
"Look around. We have some who don't care about any traditions at all, they look at the 'old Church' as narrow and guilt-ridden, and they will do anything not to go back. And we have many traditionalists who seem to focus solely on externals — it sometimes seems an idolatry of the ritual..."
"I don't see it that black-and-white," the monsignor said.
"You are leaving out all the individuals, all their acts of sacrifice, their good humor, their prayer. You have fallen into a trap. In the fight over truth, don't forget grace. Remember, there is God, the Holy Spirit, Mary..."
"But why do so many seem not to care?"
"Some are thoughtless. Some are persuaded the Church should be changed. Some just flow with the tide. Some are motivated by money. And then there are those who serve other masters. That was the case with Bugnini..."
I was startled. Not because of what he said, because it is an old allegation, but because of the way he said it, as if it was something settled, beyond discussion.
"Of
course, I have heard that," I said, "but why do you say it so bluntly,
as if it were certain? I thought it was just an allegation?"

"It
is certain," he said. "At least, as certain as anything can be in this
world. He went to a meeting in the Secretariat of State, with his briefcase.
It was in 1975. Later that evening, when everyone had gone home, a monsignor
found the briefcase Bugnini had left behind. The monsignor decided to open
it to see who the owner was. And when he opened it, he found letters inside
addressed to Bugnini, as to a brother, from the Grand Master of Italian
Freemasonry..."
"But could those letters have been forgeries?" I asked. "Could someone have opened the briefcase, seen it was Bugnini's, and then slipped these false documents inside, to frame him?" "Well, theoretically, I suppose, that is possible. [Note to readers: Bugnini himself always said the allegations were false, that he was never a freemason, and that the charges were made against him by disgruntled conservatives who opposed the work he had done on the liturgy.] |
But Paul VI, at least, didn't think so. When the evidence was brought to him, he came to the conclusion that Bugnini needed to be removed immediately from his post. Bugnini was made the papal nuncio in Iran. After more than 25 years as the head of the liturgical reform, he was abruptly fired and sent to a country where there are hardly any Catholics at all. It was a type of banishment.
"That is very sad," I said.
"No," he said, "it is very human... And today, 35 years later, it is in the past. It is something we can do nothing about."
"But if this is really true," I said, "then Paul VI may have approved of the new Mass under 'false pretences,' as it were. Wouldn't that raise questions about the entire liturgical reform? And why, then, did Paul VI not go back to the drawing board, if he believed what you say was true?"

"But the losses are so great," I said, "it is as if the link between our time and the past has been severed..."
"No!" He looked fiercely at me. "You yourself are evidence that it has not been severed. And so am I. And I tell you, that even were you to fall, and betray the faith, and even were I to fall, and even if all around us were to fall, still, the Church will not be defeated. She will prevail. a religious order founded in 1941 by the late Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado,

and who left a grown daughter who was born out-of-wedlock.
Even after death, Maciel wields power through the influence he secured.
While the American Catholic Church has been publicly battered by two decades of priest sexual abuse scandals that erupted in the press and devastated church finances with hundreds of millions of dollars spent on compensating victims and legal fees, the Maciel scandal has gone largely unnoticed by most of the American press.
There’s a reason: For decades, the Legion shunned the media while Maciel cultivated relationships with some of the most powerful, conservative Catholics in the world. In Maciel's militant spirituality, Legionaries — and their wing of lay supporters, Regnum Christi — see themselves as saving the church from a corrupted world. Behind the silence he imposed, Maciel was corrupt — abusing seminarians and using money in ways that several past and present seminarians liken to bribery, in forging ties with church officials.
The silence Maciel imposed on his followers allowed Maciel to pursue a double life.
Maciel, who was born into a wealthy ranching family in Mexico, wooed cardinals and bishops with money, fine wines, $1,000 hams and even a new car — and in so doing secured support for his religious order inside the Roman Curia.
Now, as the investigating bishops, called “visitators” — from America, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Chile — begin travels for interviews in the order’s far-flung religious houses, two Vatican officials are in the Legion’s corner.
Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals and the former Secretary of State, and Franc Rode, the cardinal who oversees religious congregations, were both longtime allies of Maciel and strong supporters of the order today.
The issue facing Benedict has no precedent in modern church history: whether to dismantle a movement with a $650 million budget yet only about 700 priests and 2,500 seminarians, or to keep the brand name and try to reform an organization still run as a cult of personality to its founder. Excessive materialism and psychological coercion tactics continue Maciel’s legacy.
Two years ago Benedict abolished the “secret vows” by which each Legionary swore never to criticize Maciel or any superior, and to report any criticism to the leadership. The vows helped facilitate Maciel’s secret life of sexual plunder.

KRAKOW, Poland — Emerging from the quiet of her convent, Sister Anastazja Pustelnik was confronted by a jarring image — her smiling face on posters plastered around town to hawk the cookbooks that have made the 59-year-old nun one of Poland's best-selling authors.
It's fame Sister Anastazja never bargained for when she left the material world as a young woman, expecting to toil in obscurity for God. But her ability to create easy-to-follow recipes for delectable cakes and traditional home cooking has resulted in five cookbooks since 2001 that have sold a combined 1.1 million copies in this country of 38 million.
Today, her cookbooks are found in shops and online, their glossy covers showing Pustelnik with an apron over her black nun's habit and a mixing bowl or serving platter in hand, generating the unwelcome fame thrust upon her. "Once when I was walking through town and there were advertisements for one of my books, I felt like tearing them down," she confessed. "But I was afraid of paying a fine."
Sister Anastazja's success comes amid a broader trend of men and women of God earning renown and profit in Europe with cookbooks and TV shows. A Spanish television channel, for example, broadcasts "Bocaditos de Cielo" — Little Mouthfuls of Heaven — in which Sisters Liliana and Beatriz of the Franciscan Conceptionist Sisters Convent guide viewers through the culinary steps for making ancient sweet recipes while also offering insight into their cloistered life.
In Poland, a deeply Roman Catholic country with a strong bond to the late Polish pope, John Paul II, the appeal of Sister Anastazja also reflects how the Catholic church is still present in daily life even as economic growth and European Union membership push the country toward secularization. Priests and nuns are common characters in Polish television serials. And a nun is a much more likely kitchen guide to Polish village housewives than such cooking superstars as Britain's Nigella Lawson or the American Rachael Ray.
Despite worldly success, Sister Anastazja says all her efforts are in service to God. After morning prayers, she walks every day from her convent to the Jesuit center in downtown Krakow to cook lunch for 20 priests, giving them "strength when they go out into the world." At Easter she bakes each priest a lamb-shaped cake to take on visits to their families. One of her cakes, she said, came to her in a dream. The creation, dubbed "A Nun's Secret," layers cheesecake, pink fruity gelatin and yellow cake all beneath a shell of chocolate icing.
"It is only God who gives me the recipes. Who else?" Sister Anastazja, a member of the order Daughters of Divine Love, said in an interview with The Associated Press at the Jesuit center.
Sister Anastazja had been cooking for the Jesuits for years when they got the idea to put some of her best recipes together in a brochure, said Father Bogdan Calka, a director at the Catholic publishing house WAM. That evolved into her first book, "103 Cakes of Sister Anastazja," which was published in 2001 and became a surprise success. With 400,000 copies sold to date, it is her most popular book. Later books include recipes for Polish classics: hearty casseroles, a cabbage-and-sausage stew called bigos, and golabki, or stuffed cabbage rolls. Her latest book, published this year, brings together 123 salad recipes.
Calka said profits from the books go to "good causes," including Jesuit educational programs. He said negotiations are under way for translations to be published in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The publishers say Sister Anastazja's books owe their success to recipes that are easy to follow and don't intimidate new cooks. "It seems to me that every woman should like cooking," Sister Anastazja said, speaking in her ground-floor work space, an immaculate area containing a kitchen — with a crucifix on the wall — and a pantry whose shelves are stocked with beets and tomatoes she canned herself.
Most of her recipes are Polish classics, but a few international favorites are included, such as Greek moussaka, Hungarian lecso and Italian dishes like spaghetti carbonara. She said she began to embrace Italian dishes when some of the Jesuit priests requested them after returning from studies in Rome. Still, Sister Anastazja says cakes remain her favorite, noting that the cheesecakes her mother made with fresh cow's milk in the southern mountain village of Dylagowa fostered a "sweet tooth" in her childhood that has lasted all her life. "You can see that," she said, nodding down to her matronly figure.
Through the years, Sister Anastazja has included more of her own inventions, recipes that get tweaked and perfected with feedback from the Jesuits. Her dishes also have evolved to reflect a new abundance in Polish supermarkets compared to communist times, when even raisins and real chocolate could not be found, she said. In the past 20 years, exotic ingredients have slowly made their way to Krakow's shops: kiwi, California plums, mangoes.
"Her latest book would have never come out 10 years ago because there wouldn't have been any way to prepare such unusual salads," Calka said. The book offers up a ravioli salad with sun-dried tomatoes and other entrees that use capers, bamboo shoots and the leafy green known as rocket or arugula. "It's fantastic that everything is now available in shops."

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat. The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy was run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.
Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system and "grave deviations and failures."
An encyclical is the highest form of papal writing and gives the clearest indication to the world's 1.1 billion Catholics -- and to non-Catholics -- of what the pope and the Vatican think about specific social and moral issues. The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.
Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

Reports circulating in the Kremlin today are saying that Russian Air Force Commanders have issued warnings to all of their aircraft to exercise “extreme caution” during flights “in and around” an area defined as Latitude 17 North [North Atlantic Ocean] Latitude 3 South [South Atlantic Ocean] to Latitude 8 North [Indian Ocean] Latitude 19 South [Indian Ocean] between the Longitudes of 46 West, 33 West, 46 East and 33 East, and which covers the greater part of the African Tectonic Plate.
The reason for this unprecedented warning, these reports state, are the rapid formations of “geomagnetic storms” emanating from the boundaries of the African Tectonic Plate that due to their intensity have caused the loss of two major passenger aircraft during the past month leaving nearly 300 men, women and children dead.
The first aircraft to be downed by this phenomenon was Air France passenger flight 447, and which these reports say that upon encountering one of these geomagnetic storms, on June 1st, near the western boundary of the African Tectonic Plate close to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha Islands, was “completely annihilated” causing the deaths of 216 passengers and 12 crew members as their plane plunged in pieces into the Atlantic Ocean.

MOUNT GRAHAM, Ariz. — Fauré’s “Requiem” is playing in the background, followed by the Kronos Quartet. Every so often the music is interrupted by an electromechanical arpeggio — like a jazz riff on a clarinet — as the motors guiding the telescope spin up and down. A night of galaxy gazing is about to begin at the Vatican’s observatory on Mount Graham.
“Got it. O.K., it’s happy,” says Christopher J. Corbally, the Jesuit priest who is vice director of the Vatican Observatory Research Group, as he sits in the control room making adjustments. The idea is not to watch for omens or angels but to do workmanlike astronomy that fights the perception that science and Catholicism necessarily conflict.
Last year, in an opening address at a conference in Rome, called “Science 400 Years After Galileo Galilei,” Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the secretary of state of the Vatican, praised the church’s old antagonist as “a man of faith who saw nature as a book written by God.” In May, as part of the International Year of Astronomy, a Jesuit cultural center in Florence conducted “a historical, philosophical and theological re-examination” of the Galileo affair. But in the effort to rehabilitate the church’s image, nothing speaks louder than a paper by a Vatican astronomer in, say, The Astrophysical Journal or The Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
On a clear spring night in Arizona, the focus is not on theology but on the long list of mundane tasks that bring a telescope to life. As it tracks the sky, the massive instrument glides on a ring of pressurized oil. Pumps must be activated, gauges checked, computers rebooted. The telescope’s electronic sensor, similar to the one in a digital camera, must be cooled with liquid nitrogen to keep the megapixels from fuzzing with quantum noise.
As Dr. Corbally rushes from station to station flicking switches and turning dials, he seems less like a priest or even an astronomer than a maintenance engineer. Finally when everything is ready, starlight scooped up by the six-foot mirror is chopped into electronic bits, which are reconstituted as light on his video screen.
“Much of observing these days is watching monitors and playing with computers,” Dr. Corbally says. “People say, ‘Oh, that must be so beautiful being out there looking at the sky.’ I tell them it’s great if you like watching TV.”
Dressed in blue jeans and a work shirt, he is not a man who wears his religion on his sleeve. No grace is offered before a quick casserole dinner in the observatory kitchen. In fact, the only sign that the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope is fundamentally different from the others on Mount Graham, the home of an international astronomical complex operated by the University of Arizona, is a dedication plaque outside the door.
“This new tower for studying the stars has been erected on this peaceful site,” it says in Latin. “May whoever searches here night and day the far reaches of space use it joyfully with the help of God.” At that point, religion leaves off and science begins.
The Roman Catholic Church’s interest in the stars began with purely practical concerns when in the 16th century Pope Gregory XIII called on astronomy to correct for the fact that the Julian calendar had fallen out of sync with the sky. In 1789, the Vatican opened an observatory in the Tower of the Winds, which it later relocated to a hill behind St. Peter’s Dome. In the 1930s, church astronomers moved to Castel Gandolfo, the pope’s summer residence. As Rome’s illumination, the electrical kind, spread to the countryside, the church began looking for a mountaintop in a dark corner of Arizona.
Building on Mount Graham was a struggle. Apaches said the observatory was an affront to the mountain spirits. Environmentalists said it was a menace to a subspecies of red squirrel. There were protests and threats of sabotage. It wasn’t until 1995, three years after the edict of Inquisition was lifted against Galileo, that the Vatican’s new telescope made its first scientific observations.
The target tonight is three spiral galaxies — Nos. 3165, 3166, 3169 in the New General Catalog — lying about 60 million light-years from Earth, a little south of the constellation Leo. Sitting at a desk near Dr. Corbally is Aileen O’Donoghue, an astronomer from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., who is interested in how these gravitational masses tug at one another, creating the stellar equivalent of tides.
“Exposing, 30 minutes,” she says. As Celtic ballads play in the control room, data is sucked up by hard drives, and a column of numbers scrolls down her computer screen. Dr. O’Donoghue, who was raised Roman Catholic, is the author of “The Sky Is Not a Ceiling: An Astronomer’s Faith,” in which she describes how she lost and then rediscovered God “in the vastness, the weirdness, the abundance, the seeming nonsensicalness, and even the violence of this incredible universe.”
In person she’s not nearly so intense. While waiting for an image to gel, she steps out on a balcony for a look at the unprocessed sky. The Beehive Cluster, one of the first things Galileo saw with his telescope, is sparkling in the constellation Cancer. Next to it is Leo, where Dr. O’Donoghue is looking for the gravitational tides.
“It’s the real sky that matters,” she says. She describes how she makes her undergraduate students go outside and look at the Big Dipper at different times of the night. “They come back and say, ‘It moves!’ ” — words Galileo legendarily muttered after he was forced to recant. “You can tell students that the Earth rotates, but until they see that with their eyeballs, they’re not doing science,” she said. “You might as well be teaching theology and Scripture.”
Back inside the control room she explains how the gravitational tides she is studying might be stellar nurseries. As one galaxy brushes by another, clouds of gas are stirred so violently that they give birth to stars.
In the Vatican Observatory’s annual report, at the point where a corporation might describe its business strategy, is a section delineating the difference between creatio ex nihilo (creation from nothing) and creatio continua: “the fact that at every instant, the continued existence of the universe itself is deliberately willed by God, who in this way is continually causing the universe to remain created.”
Theologians call these “primary causes,” those that flow from the unmoved mover. Sitting atop this eternal platform is another layer, the “secondary causes,” which can be safely left to science.
Dr. Corbally and Dr. O’Donoghue continue working through the night, collecting data on secondary causes — galactic tides, stellar birth. Sleep will wait until morning, and thoughts about primary causes for another time.
The newspaper of the Italian bishops conference has published new evidence that Hitler's security forces had planned to either kidnap or kill Pope Pius XII. It has long been conjectured that Hitler had ordered the SS commander in Italy, General Karl Wolf, to seize the Vatican and take the Pope, Zenit reports.
New evidence published today by Avvenire now points to the role of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (the Third Reich's main security office) in devising a plot to take out the Pope. The newspaper cited the testimony of Niki Freytag Loringhoven, 72, the son of Wessel Freytag von Loringhoven, who during World War II was a colonel in the High Command of the German Armed Forces.
According to the son, days after Hitler's Italian ally, Benito Mussolini, had been arrested at the orders of King Victor Emmanuel III, Hitler ordered the Reichssicherheitshauptamt to devise a plot to punish the Italian people by kidnapping or murdering Pius XII and the king of Italy.
Hearing of the project, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the German counterintelligence service, informed his Italian counterpart, General Cesare Amè, during a secret meeting in Venice from July 29-30, 1943. Also present at the meeting were colonels Erwin von Lahousen and Wessel Freytag von Loringhoven, who both worked in Section II of German counterintelligence, which dealt primarily with sabotage.
Canaris, Von Lahousen and Freytag von Loringhoven had all been part of the German resistance against the Nazis. Amè, upon returning to Rome, spread news of the plans against Hitler in order to block them, which proved successful. The plan was quickly dropped. According to Avvenire, this testimony coincides with the deposition given by Von Lahousen during the Nuremberg war crimes trials on February 1, 1946.
Summertime camps boom: The "Godless alternative" for non-believers

Atheists have become the latest group to cash in on Britain's booming summer camp industry by creating the country's first-ever retreat for irreligious children. Billed as a "godless alternative" to traditional religious summer camps, the five-day retreat is being hosted by Camp Quest, an American organisation which uses the advertising slogan "Beyond Belief" and has a growing following in the States.
The existence of a humanist summer camp where religion is approached in a critical and rational manner adds to a growing pantheon of US-style holiday getaways in Britain ranging from evangelical Bible schools to fat camps for obese teenagers.
Camp Quest was founded in 1996 as an alternative to the Boy Scouts of America, which insists on members signing a "Declaration of Religious Belief". In response Camp Quest set up an alternative summer camp for the children of "atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and all those who embrace a naturalistic rather than supernatural world view".
